Giesen The Brothers Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2012 Vintage) says
Fleshy, sweet-fruited blend, grown mostly in the Dillons Point district, in the lower Wairau Valley, and partly (6.5 per cent) barrel-fermented. Attractively scented, with firm acid spine, a touch of complexity and punchy, ripely herbaceous flavours.

Delicate hints of blossoms and citrus fruit on the nose. Good, pithy, grapefruit palate.

The brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel elevate a few parcels each year as a standout expression of Marlborough sauvignon, and this shows lovely, fine aromas of lime and betel leaf, gentle passionfruit and a really bright, lively impression. The palate has plenty of tangy lime fruit flavour, gently tropical, and the acidity sits nicely in the mix here, holding shape and length. Terrific, fresh and convincing style.

Introducing my favourite Giesen sauvignon, much more sophisticated than it's little brother (the one that's always flaunting itself in the discount aisle), and ever so much more relaxed than its overworked big brother, August. A small component of hand picked sauvingon was wild yeast fermented in old barrels contributing an extra dimension of refinement and textural depth, charging it with impressive freshness at two years of age. It's alive with frangipane aromatics and a zesty palate of grapefruit, custard apple, golden delicious apple and mixed spice. For all its flamboyant complexity, it finishes crunchy, zesty and very long.

The trio of Theo, Alex and Marcel choose a few parcels each year as more intensely fruited and make this select cuvee of Marlborough sauvignon. Aromas of beautifully worked, flinty complexity, gooseberry, lime and green mango here. The palate's supple and intensely flavoured, really fleshy through the middle, holding bright and tangy through the finish. Superb.

An impressive wine from these sauvignon-loving brothers. It has abundant passionfruit and citrus fruit on the nose, plenty of gooseberry, some peach and nectarine too. The palate’s sparkling with crunchy acid and juicy, even fruit flavour. Really terrific focus and length. Brilliant!

ÔSweaty' bouquet. Fresh, with passionfruit/lime flavours, showing some oak-derived complexity, and a crisp, dry finish.
