Glenguin Aristea Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The Aristea is Glenguin Estates icon wine, a classic old vine Shiraz from the Hunter that has not just national but international acclaim, even leading world wine authority Jancis Robinson to comment that it’s one of her favourite Australian Shiraz. With only 200 dozen made this is rare as hen’s teeth and a perfect wine for the cellar as Hunter Shiraz like this can age for decades thanks to their acid profile. Black fruits, savoury tannins and integrated oak make this a wine to savour with dishes like roast duck.

Winemaker's Notes

This vintage produced a superb concentrated wine which demonstrates the heights shiraz can achieve in the Hunter. Made from vines descended directly from the Busby plantings at Kirkton this wine provides a link with the pre-phylloxera cuttings taken from France by James Busby in the 1820s! Aristea will continue to develop greater complexity in bottle over many years and only a paltry 200 cases were made.

Glenguin Aristea Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Crimson-purple; the bouquet is fresh, and the medium-bodied palate reciprocates with its lively plum and red cherry fruit still in the infancy of what will be a long life, and has near-perfect balance. 200 dozen made.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
The top of the Glenguin shiraz tree, and this is a very handy wine that delivers plenty of authentic, straight-framed Hunter shiraz in the dark berry and plum style, some nicely handled oak in the mix, and a lovely, nutty edge. The palate s sturdy, ripe and focused, showing plenty of bright red and purple berry fruit flavour, pleasantly grippy tannins, all nice and fine, and handy length. Will age nicely.

Evocative of the great Hunter shiraz. Great purity of plummy regional shiraz pushing the ripeness barrier giving a full structure large volume of supple tannins and flavours of plum with clove-like spice fruit.

Excellent crimson hue; an evocative bouquet ranging through dominant black fruits and subtle regional earth and leather notes, oak in the background, the medium- to full-bodied palate bringing some licorice into play, tannins in great balance; 240 dozen m

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
Walsh tasted this three times, with consistent results. Some wines are easy to rate, others take time to get your head around. Needs a few years rest in the bottle to come together. It smells of bacon fat, rubber and Plasticine, but when you take a mouthful you find a medium-bodied hit of juicy fruit flavour - cherries, blackberries and deli meat. The acid is a bit edgy but there's a nice spread of firm tannin. It has a savoury, bacony aftertaste. Will polarise, but it has underlying quality.

Bright colour; very concentrated, with toasty oak, redcurrant fruit and a touch of leather on the bouquet; a firm and quite dry palate, with a savoury tar-like quality to the finish

A very complex, medium-bodied wine already showing regional character with some gently earthy, spicy overtones to the black fruits; has outstanding texture and structure; will be a true classic; 150 dozen made; dry-grown vines.

Powerful, distinguished shiraz from a very good Hunter Valley vintage; medium- to full-bodied, with perfectly balanced blackberry fruit, tannins and oak. Undoubted 20-year development; 250 cases made; high-quality cork.

Firm, slightly savoury black fruits offset by almost sweet tannins and clever oak handling.
