Glenguin Old Broke Block Semillon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Glenguin has quickly forged a reputation as one of the Hunter Valley’s secret weapons when it comes to producing varietal wines that thrive in the region. Hunter Semillon should not have a PR crisis when it tastes this good but still we have a job on our hands in convincing more people to drink it. This wine delights as a young wine and will be just as mesmerizing as it matures. It has a core of lemon acidity that ensures it’s a cracking companion for fresh seafood, but give it time and it will become a toasty and honeyed elixir.

Winemaker's Notes

Classic unwooded low alcohol Hunter semillon but with a measure of ripe citrus fruit characters and low SO2 making for an attractive young wine. The 2009 has the crisp racy mouth-watering acidity of this vineyard.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Bright straw-green; a fragrant grass, herb and citrus bouquet, the palate particularly expressive given its low alcohol and youth; the only quibble is that the finish is slightly short;

Bright green-straw; in the mainstream of the unique, high-flavoured style of Hunter semillon from '07; layers of flavour, but did need a touch more acidity.

Smells like a classic Hunter: lemon pith and savoury dry cut straw, some gentle herbs running behind. The palate has superbly stated elegance and searing acidity that drives fine lemony flavour along a sharp line through the finish. Brilliant.

Said to be later-picked, but that does not reflect in the alcohol, although there is a touch of citrus and even stone fruit; good finish.

Spotlessly clean; plenty of lemon/lemon tart flavour, but a slightly congested finish.

Crisp and clean; very good mouthfeel, balance and length; appealing lemony acidity on the finish and aftertaste.

Light green-yellow; the bouquet is quite intense, with grassy varietal character and a whiff of SO2, which will dissipate in time and help the wine along a lengthy maturation path. The palate has attractive herby/citrussy flavour, and the structure to develop into something special.
