Dave Glover's Nelson red is typically sturdy, with strong cassis/plum flavours laden with tannin. It demands time. Power, rather than finesse, is the key attribute, but if you're prepared to wait, it can be rewarding. The 1999 vintage ranks among the best yet. Bold in colour, with blackcurrant and red berry aromas, it has buckets of fruit and chewy tannins. Spicy and ripe, with sweet, ripe-tasting fruit, as usual it lacks some of the finer touches, but there's no denying the raw power, and it does have loads of character

The 1997 vintage of Dave Glover's Upper Moutere red is the first since 1994. Still very youthful, it's a sturdy wine with lots of character. Purple/black, with strong cassis/plum flavours, laden with tannin, it demands time - open 2002 onwards. There's more power than finesse here, but if you're prepared to wait, it could be very rewarding. A rating is sitting on the fence - but it's that sort of wine.
