Greenhough Hope Vineyard Pinot Noir

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
Hailing from Nelson at the top of the South Island, this Pinot displays savoury red cherry, plum and redcurrant fruits with hints of five spice, Peking duck, shiitake broth and sexy, subtle oak. The palate has a distinct, alluring, savoury edge that will win many Pinot lovers hearts, but the finish falls away a little too quickly.

One of Nelson's greatest reds, at its best powerful, rich and long-lived. It is estate-grown on an elevated terrace of the south-eastern Waimea Plains, where the vines, planted in gravelly loam clays, range up to 29 yeats old. Yields are very low - 4 to 5 tonnes of grapes per hectare - and the wine is matured for a year in French oak barrels (25 to 50 per cent new). The 2008 vintage is a lovely wine, deeply coloured, powerful and concentrated. It has deep, ripe flavours of plums and spices, unusually savoury and complex, and the structure to age well.

One of Nelsons finest wines. The 2001 vintage was harvested at a very ripe 24.8 to 25.6 brix and matured in French oak barriques (25 per cent new). Delicious from the start, it's a very refined wine, full-coloured, with sweet-fruit characters, strong, fresh, vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours and a silky texture. The 2002 is notably complex. Full-coloured, it is a less buoyantly fruity style than most of the region's reds, placing its accent on savoury, spicy, gamey, nutty characters. Firmly structured, it offers extremely satisfying drinking from 2004 onwards.

Bright and clear purple-red; the bouquet is fresh, clean, of light to medium intensity showing plummy fruit and subtle oak. The palate is pleasant, offering direct plum fruit flavours in the no-frills style the vineyard seems to produce.

Michael Cooper (1997 Vintage) says
The skilfully made 1997 vintage of this Nelson wine was made from low-cropped vines (5 tonnes per hectare), fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 10 months in French oak casks (40 per cent new). Deeply coloured, with strong, plummy, spicy fruit flavours and oak, it's a complex style with a faint herbal edge.
