With a shower of awards around the world in the past few years, this label has established itself as a regional classic. Concentrated, rich and lush, it's a powerful Sauvignon Blanc, opulent and weighty, with huge drinkability. The grapes are drawn from vineyards (both company-owned and growers') scattered across the Wairau Valley. In most years, the blend includes minor portions of Semillon and (unusually) Chardonnay, and since 1995, around 20 per cent has gone through malolactic fermentation to 'improve the wine's complexity and texture'. Lees-aged prior to bottling, the light lemon/green 2003 vintage is full and crisp, with searching melon/capsicum flavours and a slightly flinty, long finish. It should be at its best from early 2004 onwards.

Showing the extra edge of intensity that typifies the label, the 2002 vintage is pungently scented, weighty and finely balanced, with deep gooseberry/lime flavours and a rich, zingy finish.

Light green-yellow; the bouquet is clean and crisp, with a mix of mineral, herb and gooseberry aromas. The palate follows precisely down the track of the bouquet, classically flavoured but not particularly intense, particularly when tasted in the context of mid-range Australian Sauvignon Blancs (and also at the Auckland Royal Easter Wine Show 2000).

Light green-yellow; the bouquet is clean, restrained, with moderately ripe tropical fruit, but still lacking focus in the manner of virtually all '98s. However, the wine is exceptionally easy drinking, with enough varietal character to convince yet not so much to confront. Passionfruit and gooseberry flavours are there, and it is no doubt these which carried the wine to its gold medals at the 1998 Air New Zealand Wine Show, the 1999 Sydney International Wine Competition and the 1999 Liquorland Royal Easter Wine Show.

With a shower of awards around the world in the past three years, this label has established itself as a regional classic. Concentrated, rich and lush, it's a powerful Sauvignon Blanc, opulent and weighty, with huge drinkability. The grapes are drawn from vineyards scattered across the Wairau Valley. In most years, the blend includes minor portions of Semillon and (unusually) Chardonnay, and since 1995, around 20 per cent has gone through malolactic fermentation to "improve the wine's complexity and texture". The 1998 vintage is a lovely wine. Freshly aromatic, mouthfilling and powerful, it shows superb richness and ripeness, while retaining the region's typical punch and zing. Intense, ripe flavours of melons and limes are cut with fresh acidity, building to an extremely persistent finish.

Light yellow-green; a spotlessly clean, wonderfully fragrant, almost crunchy crisp gooseberry and passionfruit bouquet leads into a wonderfully pure palate, with impeccable balance, outstanding length and glorious varietal definition.
