Cracka Review

Heathcote is a region to watch when it comes to Shiraz and we love the way the wines of the area are extremely expressive of the land. Its ancient soils are millions of years old and imbue the wines with a minerality that is unique and intriguing. This wine can be enjoyed while young but it reveals a structure and tannin weight that has given the region such a fine reputation. Cherries and oak mingle on the nose before delivering a medium weight palate that’s savoury yet full of bright fruit. For best results crank up the hot plate and pair this with a large cut of beef and horseradish mash.

Winemaker's Notes

A beautifully balanced wine packed with flavour and complexity, embodying the affinity between the Heathcote region and the shiraz grape. Will age for at least 10 years under ideal cellaring conditions.

The rare, ideal location of Heathcote Estate, planted on the deep red Cambrian soil, imparts amazing depth and character to our shiraz.

Our 5 individual blocks and their various sections where handled separately in the winery and vintage 2013 created 14 unique batches of wine. The grapes were fermented in a combination of open and closed fermenters after gentle destemming, with some batches receiving whole bunches. The wines where then pressed and transferred immediately into barrels for malolactic fermentation. It remained in barrel for a total of 17 months (a combination of 20% new, second and third use barrels, 100% French oak) and during maturation was racked three times. During the winemaking and maturation process, the most exceptional parcels of shiraz were identified and only the most outstanding made it into the final blend. This commitment to quality saw 40% of the Shiraz being declassified from the final blend. The resulting wine was bottled in July 2014.

Heathcote Estate Shiraz

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Very stylish, long and complete, this surprisingly powerful and full-bodied shiraz harnesses Heathcote's unique combination of varietal style and strength. Its sweet, spicy bouquet of fresh red and black berries, cedar/vanilla oak, five spice and licorice has a fresh violet-like perfume. Medium to full-bodied, it's firm and fine-grained, with a deep, dark expression of black and red fruits harmoniously knit with fine, drying tannins and fine oak, revealing nuances of minerals and cola.
The Australian Wine Annual 2013
James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Bright mid-garnet; highly perfumed, lifted and restrained red fruit bouquet, showing elements of Provenal garrigue and roasted game; the palate is firm, densely packed, highly detailed and light on its feet, with delicacy winning out over raw power; surprisingly and gratifyingly long.
Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Dense purple; blackberry, plum, cedar and dark chocolate aromas are repeated on the medium-bodied palate; immaculate handling of oak and tannins completes a high-quality package.
Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Dense purple-crimson; typical mouthfilling array of generously proportioned blackberry, licorice and spice fruit; alcohol, tannins and oak all appropriate.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Bright red-purple; a substantial wine in every respect, with masses of dark fruits and tannins to match; well-handled French oak; has a dash of grenache.
