Hewitson LuLu-V Viognier

Cracka Review

Only grapes growing on selected, north facing, sheltered slopes have been used in LuLu-V. 2006 gave us ideal conditions for wine grapes and this Viognier was harvested at the peak of its flavour maturity with perfect levels of acidity. Great care was taken during both harvest and vinification to preserve these evocative flavours and excellent balance. LuLu-V is refreshingly crisp with silky textures and the airy perfumes of apricot, peach and acacia blossom and a cornucopia of mouth-filling fruit flavours. These include citrus zest, apricot and tangerine with hints of pawpaw, guava and tobacco.

Has positive apricot and musk flavours without becoming ponderous; good length and balance.

I once described good viognier as a bit like watching naked women wrestling in apricot jelly going completely on hearsay, of course. My offended editor changed it to naked men, and thus came close to bestowing an entirely new lifestyle on me. (It didn't take—I could never handle the neatness bit.) Good viognier is just sooooo apricoty, with or without the wrestling. This one, from Victoria, is all drink-now hedonistic joy.
