Cracka Review

A selection of our finest cuvee of Shiraz and Mourvedre from the Barossa Valley. The warmth in March drove colours and tannins to unprecedented levels while the flexibility endeared to us in the winery preserved fresh, ripe red and black forest berry fruits. Our traditional winemaking practices saw exceptional extraction followed by 20 months maturation in new French barriques. The integration is superb.

Hewitson Private Cellar McLaren Vale Shiraz Mourvedre

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Good colour to a wine highlighting the synergy between old vine shiraz and mourvedre; the bouquet has an array of sultry black fruits which the palate builds on with its complex flavour, texture and structure all harmoniously interwoven; perfect line, length and balance; the 20-year cellaring suggestion on the label is conservative.

Best Blend in Australia - This 2008 Private Cellar release is a shiraz-mourvèdre blend with immense poise and grace, fusing two varieties together with seamless stitching. With smells of blue plum and blackberry, really ripe and nicely spiced-up in the winery, the oak's well matched. The palate's supple and even, with a strong, ripe sweet-fruit presence that'sunderscored by evenly placed savoury tannin structure. The palate traces a long line through the finish; really impressive line and length here. Nicely bowled, Mr Hewitson!

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Good hue; blackberry, blackcurrant, earth and dark chocolate all coalesce on the medium- to full-bodied palate, which has outstanding texture and structure, oak and tannins precisely controlled; 20 years cellaring suggestion on front label seems remarkably modest. Magnum.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Powerful, yet very well balanced, the two varieties reacting synergisticafly; a mix of plum, black cherry and blackberry, with fine but persistent tannins; has swallowed 20 months in French oak; 20-year cellaring ex the label is conservative. Only available in magnum.

Dean Hewitson backed this prize wine all the way to the top of his range. Terrific fragrance that draws you in, plenty of tempranillo's ripe cherries, savoury oak spice and an earthy undercurrent. Nicely judged in the mouth, more medium- than full-bodied, the tannins are supple and smoothly textured. Hewitson has played this like a charm.

Deep colour; super-intense black fruits and dark chocolate, the mourvedre contributing to the texture as it should; an exciting wine with a great future

Campbell Mattinson (2005 Vintage) says
It's frisky, it's silken, it's firm, it flows across your tongue like a convincing argument, it's abundantly (dark) fruited and it's structured and long. I'm a believer in this wine. I think it's about $60. At this very young stage of its life, it seems to me to be quite superb.

Deeply coloured; blackberry and dark chocolate aromas and flavours so typical of McLaren Vale; fruit, oak and tannins in complete harmony and balance in a full-bodied frame.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Glorious bouquet of dark berry fruit; classic regional mix of blackberry, plum and bitter chocolate; Shiraz does most of the talking; no Grenache confection; 250 cases.
