Houghton Museum Release White Classic

Expert Reviews

Ray Jordan (2005 Vintage) says
Remains one of Australia's most underrated wines. This is the same as the standard current release White Classic but with an extra six years bottle age. It shows how marvellously these wines will age and this one is another beauty. Now with secondary developed characters of ripe nuttiness and breakfast marmalade. The zingy acid is still there sustaining a long finish.

I love this wine and I was most disappointed to learn from parent company Accolade that it will not be released, and no longer be made as a museum release because it was too hard to sell at $32. Hence my delight to discover that you can still partake in its joys, as a cleanskin for $10 at Get Wines Direct. It’s currently at the perfect moment of its maturity, when complexity of buttered toast, roast nuts and preserved lemon rind finds an effortless balance with the primary, zesty, crunchy fresh lemon notes of youth. A wine of excellent length and fine texture, building an enticing softness, while upholding the definition of its structure.

An article of faith that it will develop real character with bottle development; faintly reductive aromas; tropical fruit and good acidity.

Lively herbal aromas of sweet melon and tropical fruit reveal undertones of citrus and mango. Forward and brightly flavoured, its juicy palate finishes slightly sweet, with clean and refreshing acids.

A medium-bodied and balanced mix of tropical fruit salad and a twist of lemon; nice acidity. Value and development potential.

Good honest white wine with plenty of value. Its delicate, dusty aromas of citrus, peach and tropical fruit have a lightly herbal edge, while the palate is fruity and clean, generously flavoured and slightly sweet to finish.

Fragrant, distinct passionfruit aromas are replicated with the gentle tropical/passionfruit flavours of the finely structured, clean palate.

Glowing green-gold; plus ca change; Houghton was doing these back releases 10 years ago with similarly successful outcomes; the combination of crisp freshness and flavour is the reason why this wine has three gold medals to its credit.

Wonderful example of this West Aussie icon as a mature wine. We normally drink it on release but the real beauty comes as its ages. Has a beautiful nutty creaminess with lifted marmalade and orange zest. Remember, you can create your own Museum release by keeping the current release White Classic under the bed.

Light to medium yellow-green; a lively, attractive and aromatic bouquet with hints of passionfruit is replicated on the fresh, relatively light palate which will build weight and complexity over the next five years.

Light- to medium-bodied; lively and complex toast, lime, lemon and honey; brisk acidity.

Brilliant green-yellow; great balance, structure and mouthfeel; citrus and mineral, with hints of toast and spice. Unlike some others in this museum release series, the cork has not destroyed the wine.
