Howard Park Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The wine is selected from only the best batches of free-run juice; these wines demonstrate great potential for slow ageing and the development of toasty complexity and greater mouth-feel.

Appearance: Brilliant and pale lemon yellow.

Nose: Intense and lifted aromas of zested lemon / lime citrus and fresh pears.

Palate: The palate is full of fresh citrus, nashi pear and golden delicious apple flavours that give depth and richness. Whilst defined by these rich fruit flavours, the palate is guided by a fine, citrus acidity that adds length and finish to the wine.

Cellaring: In its youth, the Great Southern Riesling is bright in style, full of abundant fresh fruit, a tight citrus acidity. In time the wine will develop a nut praline and poached citrus and apple richness whilst retaining its linear acidity. Howard Park Rieslings will cellar for more than 10 years.

Alcohol: 12.0%

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Bright, gleaming straw-green; filled with juicy lime fruit and crisp, crunchy acidity, the length a given; the aftertaste lingers, and echoes the flavours of the mid-palate. Lovely wine.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Pale straw-green; each year the evidence increases that Porongurup is one of the best regions for long-lived riesling anywhere in Australia. This wine is typically exceptionally fine, and both it (and the track record of the region) tells you greatness awaits around the corner in five+ years time, and long thereafter. Do not be fooled by the reticence of its youth.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Simply a beautiful riesling and the finest from this maker for many years. Its delicate perfume of lavender, musk and lemon sherbet reveals suggestions of spice and minerals, while its pristine, crystalline palate of crunchy tropical, citrus and apple flavour extends towards an exceptionally long and focused finish. Underpinned by a fine mineral texture, it's punctuated by a tingling, racy acidity.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Exceedingly pale colour; citrus blossom aromas announce an initially mouth-puckering (in the best possible way) palate, opening quickly to reveal a zesty lime and mineral range of flavours; the acid profile promises a very long life.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Intense, almost pungent, deep lime/citrus aromas; flooded with lime juice on the palate, yet not at all heavy. Outstanding wine.

James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Light to medium yellow-green; pristine, lime-accented varietal Riesling fruit aromas announce a wine which is on a plane all of its own, immaculately elegant and pure, yet intense. The flavours are predominantly lime, with a hint of pear, the finish crisp but lingering.
