Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Heathcote is not known as Riesling country, though if anyone can make it happen then its Jasper Hill. The joy with this sort of style is that obvious juiciness, that extra weight that the rich red soils of Heathcote gives to Riesling. Hardly a conventionally styled 'Australian Riesling', yet still an interesting one, this is pretty enjoyable drinking.

Winemaker's Notes

Established in 1975 by Ron and Elva Laughton, Jasper Hill producers some of Australia’s most compelling and sought after wines. Located at Heathcote in Central Victoria on ancient Cambrian soils-deep, red coloured, well drained gravely loams on undulating hillsides. These support low-vigour vine growth without the need for supplementary irrigation.

Mouth cleansing, crisp green apple character with a swag of lemon and bitter grapefruit citrusy flavours. Bone dry on the delicious palate.

Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock Riesling

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
very complex and evolved, but also a stable, long-term riesling whose spicy, waxy scents of honeysuckle, lemon blossom and green apple skin reveal a hint of black tea. It's round and generous, with a long, bright impression of lemon/aple flavour underpinned by a chewy, chalky texture, finishing with fresh acids and fine balance for such a grippy style.

Very gentle, fresh and focused, with an open fragrance of white and yellow flowers, citrus fruit, apple and peach with mineral undertones. It's long and even with a sumptuous, round texture and a restrained but juicy presence of green apple, lemon and lime juice flavour underpinned by a fine talcum powder texture and extending long and fresh towards a racy finish of crisp, lemony acids.

Individual, distinctive and delicious, this gentle and finely balanced riesling is already evolving waxy and lanolin-like complexity. Scented with a slightly spicy perfume fresh white flowers, lemon rind and apple, it's long, supple and seamless, moving down the palate with layers of creaminess, spice and fruit, finishing quite dry, with nuances of apricot, peach and nougat.

A fine fragrance when young more citrus than floral with lime peach and apricot. Good weight lovely richness of flavour that turns to honey and cumquat with age.

A citrusy dry white with length, texture and savoury qualities. Not hugely varietal but with a sumptuous, creamy and citrusy palate of slightly candied lemony fruit, its albarino-like weight of fruit finishes long and tangy, with a slightly meaty aspect.

Long, generous and almost luscious, with a bouquet of lime juice, apple and white flowers backed by honey and citrus. Underpinned by a fine dustiness, it's rather wild and funky, with nuances of meaty, cheesy complexity before a tangy, drying, focused and shapely finish of lemony acids.

Long, finely sculpted and stylish, this delicious and persistent young riesling has a floral perfume of acacia, lemon rind and mineral. Clean and tangy, with a palate of white peach and citrus-like fruit over a slatey lick of mineral, it finishes with good persistence and freshness.

Quite floral and rich; a powerful mix of lime and tropical fruit; faintly silky finish.

Fine and elegant, this chalky young riesling has a lightly floral perfume of lemon rind, lime juice and green apples. Its juicy and deliciously vibrant palate of fresh citrus and apple flavour is tightly sculpted around crunchy acids and bath powder like phenolics, finishing with effortless length and persistence.

Powerful, minerally aromas; ripe but subdued fruit; round and relatively soft.

Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
A complex and sculpted riesling whose fragrant and spicy perfume of honeysuckle and lemon blossom precedes a savoury, rather reductive and earthy palate. It's long and elegant, but the freshness at the finish is slightly impaired by a hint of sugar and a reductive flatness.

Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says
Distinctively taut, lemony and minerally riesling poles apart from the mainstream Australian style. Its accentuated aromas of honeysuckle and lemon rind precede a steely, austere palate revealing a pleasing depth of apple, candied lemon rind and mineral flavours
