Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Strong, deep, purple-crimson; while the varietal character is not doubt, the cassis/blackberry and plum fruit is richer than the First Eleven, althought not riper in terms of alcohol-admirably controlled with each wine.

A lifted aroma with fruit freshness of black cherry and black currant. Very ripe, soft smooth tannins and generous flavours with a fine grained acidity. For lovers of big smooth reds.

The last Benbournie under cork. The colour is bright crimson-purple, the flavours more luscious and ripe than the Í10, although here, too, the alcohol has been carefully controlled. Not quiet as precise as the Í10.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Supple, stylish and elegant, with a sweet, briary bouquet of mulberries, cassis, red plums and fresh cedary oak lifted by floral notes and suggestions of dried herbs. Smooth and luscious, with its plus, evenly ripened and minty presence of cassis, dark plums, mulberries knit with cedary oak and underpinned by fine, velvety tannins, it's finely balanced and persistent.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Deep, dark and assertive, with a fiery, confiture-like bouquet of dark plums, blackberries and cedar/vanilla oak lifted by a scent of violets. Saturating the palate, dense layers of plums and cassis entwine with firm, chalky tannins, ultimately revealing nuances of currants and prunes, plus regional minty and menthol undertones. Just a fraction raw-edged and baked for a higher rating.

Very perfumed wines dark berry fruit big hefty palate and very soft tannins. Delicious varietal purity with low-key oak.

This is very oaky cabernet, with the fruit dominated; full-bodied and layered with thick black fruits and toasty oak; big-boned and very chewy on the finish; if you love them big and oaky, then this is the wine for you.

The most savoury/herbal of the top-end releases, perhaps reflecting the vintage; I'm not convinced the wine comes off, the tannins likely to outlive the fruit.

Deep colour and equally deep-flavoured wine, with blackcurrant fruit at the extremely ripe end of the scale, the tannins and oak well-handled.
