Kalleske Clarry's Grenache Shiraz Mataro

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
The Kalleskes reckon the 2012s are up there with the best wines to emerge from their famous little winery, and their first 2012 red to hit the ground is a promising sign indeed. This brilliant rendition of Clarry's unites the strawberries, raspberries and mixed spice of grenache with the deep-set black fruits, liquorice and pepper spice of shiraz and the earthy, savoury undertones of mataro, held securely in place by firm, finely textured tannins. Impressive fruit depth and definition, tangy acid and layers of spice make for one of the best value GSMs on the shelves right now.

Seductive red fruit and mineraly flavours with plenty of tension and texture, amazing value wine with generosity, warmth, flavour and complexity, a layered finish and tang to the tannins.

In its ultra stylish retro squat bottle for the first time, Clarry looks more dashing than ever. Read the recipe and the price seems inconceivable: Organic estate fruit from vines dating from the 1940s, aged in old oak hogsheads. This cool season has birthed a particularly savoury and spicy style, accented with fresh rhubarb, pepper, bay leaf and berry fruits. Fine, savoury tannins promise a longer life in the cellar than usual.

While it's possible it will build more weight and richness, this spicy, floral young blend is best suited for the short term. Its wild, floral and peppery perfume reveals a viognier-like scent of apricots, flowers and spice, while its supple, medium-weight palate does show some hollowness above its chalky spine. While there's some pleasing forward fruit, it finishes with apricot-like aspects. Not as convincing as usual.

This is great value. Big generous Barossa full of soft peppery fruit mouth filling with old vine intensity adding weight to the ripe sweet in a food friendly style that ages short term.

Vibrant purple wine with lifted floral/cassis aromas and a big, rich, layered dark fruit/tannic palate.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Juicy and generous, perhaps a little baked for the longer term, this smooth, silky red blend of medium weight has a dusty, deeply floral and meaty scent of blackberries, blueberries and licorice backed by spicy suggestions of Cloves and mocha. Its slightly raisined and meaty palate of dark, vibrant fruit is underpinned by a pliant backbone, finishing with moderate length, depth and character.

Dark in colour, and complex in character, the fruit here blends seamlessly to offer red and black fruits, loads of spice, complex Provenal herbs and a little salty edge for freshness; lively, fresh and more than just a little bit fun; excellent value.

This nouveau Barossa blend (grenache/shiraz/mataro) is terrific value and made for everyday drinking. It has a deep array of fruits on offer: cassis, blood plum, blackberry and raspberry. It's not syrupy sweet, more savoury and earthy, with gentle oak spice. The palate holds more red-fruit flavour than dark, with some candied orange, chocolate, soft and easy tannins and a twist of Moroccan spice through the back. Terrific drinking!
