Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
Word on the street is that 2012 may eclipse all before it this century for Barossa reds, and early releases like this one are certainly promising signs. One of the best value GSMs currently on the shelves.

This is great value. Big generous Barossa GSM full of soft peppery fruit, sweet with fruit ripeness and in a friendly style that ages well.

One of the pre-eminent-value red blends from the Barossa, this hails from the ultra-ripe 2008 vintage and it looks to have come through unscathed. The colour is super-purple, really vibrant and lively; it smells of grenache's red fruits and some darker cassis too. The palate is juicy and ripe with plenty of the same fruit characters here. Tannins have a juicy mid-palate presence, softening through the back.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Would seem to have been picked before the March heatwave, for the fruit flavours are juicy, expressive and fresh on the mid-palate, followed by a more savoury finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
Easy to enjoy, this generous and ultra-ripe shiraz presents a rich, rustic expression of meaty, tarry prune and currant-like flavour with an underlying presence of plums, dark berries, cloves and licorice. Its spicy, black-fruited palate delivers a treacle-like lusciousness of Christmas cake-like flavour backed by raisins and bitumen, finishing a little sweet and angular, with spicy, lightly smoky notes of cinnamon.

The vineyard blend of grenache and shiraz from the Kalleske farm out in Greenock shows plenty of oak for its humble station, earthy/brambly grenache berry fruits, some grilled nuts and chocolate. The palate's creamy and ripe, decent structure and plum/berry flavour; bold yet charming.

Some early colour development; plush but very ripe fruit flavours in a cosmetic spectrum ex the grenache.

Confectionery fruit aromas with savoury overtones. Rich cherry/raspberry flavours balanced by acid, oak and elegant tannins.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Good colour; great wine at the price; super-abundant blackberry, licorice and cherry fruit supported by soft tannins and incidental oak. Estate-grown Grenache (65%)/Shiraz (35%).

Jump on this. Clarry is Troy Kalleske s 88-year-old grandfather, who looked after the vineyards from the late 1920s to the 1990s. Fair effort—and more than deserving of being honoured with this terrific grenache and shiraz blend. These guys are making excellent wines across the board, and this one's textbook new Barossa. Approachable and plush, with some opulent choc-chip notes. The grenache is dominant, from 60-year-old vines. Clarry probably planted them.

A light- to medium-bodied mix of red fruits, spices and more leafy notes; an interesting, fruit-tingle finish. Grenache/Shiraz.

Clear, bright red-purple; an attractive array of black and red fruits with ripples of spice and chocolate; much more structure than most, and no jammy characters; oak incidental; 80% Grenache; 20% Shiraz.
