Rich, spirity and faintly varnishy, with aromas of plums, redcurrants, raspberries and raisins backed by mocha-like oak and meaty, spicecake undertones. It's deeply flavoured and sweetly fruited, with a spicy, chocolatey fruitcake- like presence of raisiny anmd plummy fruit gramed by fine, velvet-smooth tannins. Over-ripened for a higher rating, making the fruit rather more jammy and simple than it would have been if harvested earlier.

Named for the Kalleske patriarch who, with his wife Rosina, established the family's presence in the Barossa Valley in 1853. It's an old-vine shiraz from three organic vineyards (planted between 1905 and 1960) on the Kalleske estate. The 2008 Eduard is ultra-dense and powerful, has floral aromatics, layer upon layer of ripe blackberry, mulberry and dark chocolate flavours, a plush fleshy texture and substantial yet fine slinky tannins. Will improve over the next five years and, if cellared well, will be at its peak in 10.
