A very good wine despite its extreme level of alcohol. Deeply fragrant, its sweet, floral perfume of dusty violets, blackberries, raspberries and boysenberries reveals musky, earthy undertones. An exercise in restrained power, it's warm and sumptuously flavoured, effortlessly delivering a seamless length of fruit along its long, smooth and polished palate. While it's not actually over-ripened, the wine does finish a little hot and spirity.

This is an essay with distinction on the variety. Small winemaker attention to detail and fruit preservation with extremely pretty aromas of raspberry rosewater and meaty pepper with very full-bodied upfront fruit great width and developing complex game flavours with time.

This weighs in at higher alcohols but there's a soothing, soulful, old-vine richness here that carries it all off with style and convincing balance. The nose smells of brambly plums and dark berries, some toasty oak and moist, sweet, loamy earth. On the palate it's sweet and supple from start to finish, rolling smooth tannins under ripe mocha and dark fruit flavour, finishing even and satisfying.

A single-vineyard plot planted in 1935 on the Kalleske estate out in Greenock, this has true old-vine soul. Dark ripe berries and some brambly fragrance, savoury oak and earthy notes, very unevolved at this stage. Old vines bring concentration with elegance and balance, and that's what the palate is all about; smooth, supple tannins and a deep scoop through the finish. Australian grenache at the top level and phenomenal value for money on a world stage.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
This has a great big, soft heart of flavour. Actually, it's a bit lighter than the 2005, but in a good way. It tastes of raspberries, dried licorice, mint, blackberries and minimal oak, and its tannins have been beautifully and softly managed. Despite the alcohol content it's bright and juicy, its sense of length and charm singing nicely. Grenache can be too sweet and too light, but this is neither; it's rich and immensely satisfying. Top-notch.

A supple, light- to medium-bodied mix of the sweet and more savoury sides of grenache; next to no tannins, but good mouthfeel and length.

Concentrated, imperious mix of black fruits, exotic, tangy spices and sweet American oak. Far more structure than most.
