Kemblefield Hawke's Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1999 Vintage) says
Estate-grown at Mangatahi and partly fermented and lees-aged in French oak casks, this is typically a distinctive wine with some complexity. Light lemon/green, with ripe fruit aromas, the 1999 vintage is a mouthfilling wine with crisp, slightly honied flavours.

Michael Cooper (1998 Vintage) says
In the past, Kemblefield marketed a partly barrel-fermented Reserve Sauvignon Blanc and an unoaked wine, called Hawke's Bay Sauvignon Blanc. The reserve label has recently been dropped and since 1997 this wine has been made along the lines of the reserve. The 1997 is a distinctive and worthwhile wine, estate-grown at Mangatahi. Partly fermented and lees-aged for five months in French oak casks, it's a slightly Chardonnay-like wine with a buttery, oaky fragrance, power through the palate and good depth of crisp, nutty flavour. The 1998 is full-bodied and ripe, although not intense, with some nutty complexity. It lacks a bit of drink-young charm, but may simply need a bit more time; open 2000+.
