Cracka Review

Knappstein remains one of the star performers of the Clare Valley and here’s a modern take on Chardonnay that we think is just brilliant. The wine was made primarily in 95% stainless steel with the remainder made up of barrel ferment Chardonnay to add texture and complexity. Elegant and varietal the nose is perfumed with citrus, peach and tropical fruits. The palate is clean and crisp showing elements of melon and honey showing great balance and a lovely acid balance.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2012 Knappstein Chardonnay is pale straw in colour with bright flashes of green. It has a fine lifted bouquet of citrus, white peach and hints of tropical fruits. The palate is lively and fresh with lovely acid structure and balance. Stone fruit, melon and touches of honeysuckle shine through this fresh well balanced wine.

Remarkably good for the region; clean, tangy citrus melon fruit; well-controlled touch of gently smoky oak.

Pungent almost over-ripe aromas of squashed melons and bananas, quince and tobacco precede a fast-developing, juicy, round and forward, palate that lacks length and brightness.

Medium to full yellow-green; the complex bouquet shows excellent barrel ferment and oak handling; an attractive wine in the mouth. It is entirely made in the winery, not in the vineyard; stirred every Monday for 7 months and matured in predominantly new French oak. About as good as the Clare Valley can every produce with this variety.
