Knappstein 'Three' Clare Valley Gewurztraminer Riesling Pinot Gris

Expert Reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
The aromas are very pretty musk, lychee, floral and lime aromas. The palate is generous to start and firm to finish with the gewurztraminer lychee up front then apple riesling and pear gris, fruit defines the middle with a precise acidity to clean the pear, apple musk finish. Very versatile as a food wine.

With her Turkish Delight perfume and wide, slippery personality, gewŸrztraminer needs some freshening up from her friends, riesling's zest and pinot gris' pear and spice complexity.

Charmingly floral, fresh and perfumed, with a nutty scent of rose oil, peach and spice backed by a hint of washed rind cheese. Long and even, with a faintly chalkiness, it marries the richness and punchiness of gewŸrztraminer with the length of riesling and the spiciness of pinot gris, finishing quite savoury, with smoky, meaty undertones. Likely to find a little more integration with time.

This is a very clever wine and might just be one style to watch in the future. Subtle and delicate in the first year and quickly growing complex with floral lychee lemongrass complexity and roundness on the palate and very food friendly. Drink with Asian influenced dishes especially lemongrass steamed fish. In 2011 fine Gewurztraminer aromas dominate with musky ripeness in youth and the palate opens ripe and round turns lime and bright and retains acidity.

This three-way bet of Alsatian grape varieties has a nice mix of citrus, stone fruits and tropical characters, laced with the exotic perfume of gewürztraminer. The palate holds plenty of flavour; it's complex too, with melon, citrus, musk and lychee. Nicely balanced and very approachable.

As ever, an idiosyncratic blend, the core of riesling being pulled in opposite directions by the other two varieties. A vineyard-driven blend, one suspects.

A successful ploy to cover the lack of varietal character with Clare gewurztraminer; nice citrus lime fruit and a dusting of spice.

Marmalade nose and apricot pie palate - loads of flavour. _A very interesting wine,î agreed the judges.

Works surprisingly well; lovely juicy flavours, seemingly anchored on riesling and gewurztraminer; I would never have guessed the origin.

A quixotic blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris; Gewurztraminer leads the way, the others merely making up the numbers.
