Koonowla The Ringmaster Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This wine has intense deep colour and wonderful rich red and black berry fruit aromas. The 18 months in 3, 4 and 5 year old oak barrels has ensured the fruit is balanced with some soft grainy tannins and spicy oak flavours on the pallet. The wine has a soft, smooth finish and makes a great partner to all red meat dishes – especially a juicy steak!

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Relatively light colour; 18 months in used French and American oak has been a positive, not overwhelming the fruit and freshness of this light-to medium-bodied wine; the blackberry fruit has a spicy edge and good acidity. Terrific value as an early-drinking style.

Deeper colour than its bigger brother, and this sets the scene for this generously flavoured wine, with black fruits and touches of cedar and mocha, the tannins plentiful and soft, oak also a positive contributor.

Strong purple-crimson; an attractive bouquet of plum, spice, blackberry and balanced oak, then a medium- to full-bodied palate full of dark berry fruit, finishing with fine tannins.

Peter Forrestal (2006 Vintage) says
Koonowla is a large 100-hectare Clare vineyard, not far from Auburn, on land that was originally planted to vines in the late nineteenth century. So it's an historic property revitalised. O'Leary Walker vinifies some of the fruit which is sold under the Koonowla label - with 'The Ringmaster' being the budget-priced label for shiraz and cabernet. The wine has redcurrant, dark plum, blackberry and vanillin oak flavours, is soft and fleshy, so smooth it's almost silky, rich and concentrated, with a supple, approachable finish

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
It's described on the back label as a 'magnificent wine'. This is a pretty good drop, but send in a new copywriter, please! Jubey, soft, riddled with eucalypt and plush with flavour from go to whoa. It's not a magnificent wine, but it is magnificent value. Search hard and you find notes of menthol and chocolate. But really it's just so juicy and flavoursome - it's a joy to drink.

Not entirely clear, suggesting no filtration; sweet confit fruit at odds with the moderate alcohol; finishes with soft tannins.
