Langmeil Hangin' Snakes Shiraz

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Bright colour; essency and pure O blackberry, fruitcake, licorice and some tarry complexity on the bouquet; the palate is generous, super fresh and focused, leaving a trail of minerals and toast on the finish. Excellent value, vibrant Barossa shiraz.

Lifted input from the viognier tends to emphasise the ripe confit fruit flavours, when it might have been better to mute them.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
There's about 5 per cent viognier in this and, as it did last year, it works quite well. It gives a good hit of sweet, jammy flavour, and there's enough earthen, savoury flavour to stop it from seeming too one-dimensional. We rated last year's release at eighty-nine points, and we like this year's version better - but can't quite justify making it a ninety-pointer. It's an excellent, warm-hearted quaffer, though.

Abundant red and black fruits lifted by viognier and supported by oak; supple and silky mouthfeel; good length.

There's about five per cent viognier in this and normally I would have said that's too much in a style like this. They've got it working pretty well though. 2006 RELEASE If someone told me that they hated this I'd laugh and shout, I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO SAY THAT (even if I didn't). But it is a polarising style. It tastes sweet, rich and warm, its aniseedy, raspberried, candied characters mixing happily with sweet, dark, blackberried fruit flavour. The viognier is apricotty and obvious, but its exuberant fruit sweetness floats well with the sweetness of the shiraz. Lighter than the other Langmeil reds, but in a good way. DRINK 2008-2013.

Medium- to full-bodied, filled with black cherry and blackberry fruit which does, however, go slightly over the top; that said, good length.

Yet another of the shiraz viognier wines that have popped up and taken over Aussies in much the same way that the Socceroos just arrived all of a sudden last year. I mean, honestly, before June 2006 did you have a clue who Tim Cahill or Lucas Neill was? Sorry Mrs Cahill, I love your son, but really! This wine is dedicated to 'hanging snakes'. Now what could that be? Haven't a clue.
