Lenton Brae Wilyabrup Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
There is both confidence and grace here, a difficult combination to achieve in SSB fermented entirely in new oak - surely a testimony to both the predominance of semillon in the blend and to the expertise of the estate. This is a tightly focused style that completely soaks up very classy new oak, expressing itself more in texture than flavour. A compellingly poised profile of lemon, grapefruit, lime zest, subtle lantana nuances and the lightest brush of hazelnut is underlined by a pronounced and finely poised textural mouthfeel.

Stylish and finely crafted, with a dusty vanillin fragrance of gooseberries, white flowers and faint herbal notes. Long and smooth, with bright, juicy fruit tightly knit with creamy vanilla oak and backed by scents of dried herbs, it tapers gradually towards a long and focused finish of lively acidity.

The perfume on this wine can be described as nothing short of astonishing, with lavender, bath talc, citrus blossom and cut grass; the palate is racy on entry, with zesty acidity commencing the journey and then the almond expression of barrel work drawing out the generous finish; exotic and thoroughly engaging, this has complexity and freshness in spades.

Always up there with the best of this blend. Not surprising since these guys were among the first to make it. Fermented and matured in French oak which brings additional complexity and interest into the wine. Displays excellent texture with deep intense flavours help to a long finish by a lancing acidity.

Fragrant, fresh and focused, with a lightly herbaceous bouquet of pineapple, passionfruit and gooseberries before an intense, forward and rather concentrated palate of pure, essential fruit flavour. Wrapped in clean, lemony acids, it finishes with length and brightness.

This is designed to add another impressive dimension to the standard semillon sauvignon blanc blend. It gets plenty of French oak fermentation and maturation adding both texture and complexity to the intensely flavoured fruit base. There's an appealing combination of creaminess with lovely lemon scented oak. Very long and just starting in its journey really.

The top-tier dry white blend from Lenton Brae is in fine fettle, showing all the complexity you'd expect from partial barrel fermentation, some green capsicum, fresh lemongrass and thai basil, cumquat and guava. The palate's finely assembled, with a sense of restraint and elegance. Good concentration and focus here - plenty of lemon citrus and melon, and some fresh almond through the finish.

A finely balanced oak-matured expression of this regional style, with a smoky, lightly funky bouquet of gooseberries, melon, lime and mineral knit with fresh vanilla and lightly toasty oak and backed by a hint of grassiness. It's rather round, creamy and viscous, but smoothes out over some toasty oak to deliver fresh melon and passionfruit-like flavour before finishing soft and creamy, with gentle acids.

Light straw-green; a 60/40 blend, barrel-fermentation and maturation (used for the first time) in new French oak has added to, not detracted from, a wine with a proud track record, citrus and mineral flavours still foremost on a long, crisp palate.

This limited release blend differs from the standard blend in that it is blended first them gets nine months in new French oak, first in fermentation and then maturation. It really strikes as an entirely different wine with the barrel influence profound providing minerally funky notes to powerful fruit. It's still very tight with that lemony zip still racing across the palate. Will be worthwhile left in the cellar for an extended period.

They've really nailed this style in 2009, with a complex and polished nose reminiscent of the finest white Bordeaux. The direct, concentrated fruit pushes through rich French oak and makes a case for a long life ahead - smells of lemon balm, gooseberry, cut grass and cedary oak. The palate's built for the long haul, with invisible joins, crisp acid and abundant lemon flavours running long through the finish.

Somewhat richer and fuller- bodied than prior vintages, flavour achieved without reliance on alcohol; this is an unashamedly French oak barrel-fermented and matured style in classic White Bordeaux style.

In typical Lenton Brae style, with immaculate line, length and balance, the French oak perfectly integrated with the mix of citrus, gooseberry and herbs. A special 100-case release through cellar door.
