Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
Ripe plum and rich berry compote fruit define the personality of this concentrated vintage, but purists need have no fear, for toned acidity and finely structured tannins pull the finish in tight and refined.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Fine-grained and elegant, this supple and stylish Bordeaux blend has balance, structure and an enticing, floral perfume of red berries, cassis, plums and fresh cedary oak backed by dusty notes of dried herbs. It's charmingly long and measured, with an intense presence of small black and red berries, cherries and a tight-knit backbone, finishing with a suggestion of dried herbs.

A wine that came into existence when an experimental blend won the Jimmy Watson Trophy in the days when the wine did not have to be bottled; it is curious that these blends are not common in Coonawarra, for the result is a harmonious medium-bodied wine, fruit to the fore, with a long, balanced palate, the oak integrated.

Strong colour; has more depth, structure and texture than many prior vintages; black bramble and Coonawarra earth fruits define the bouquet, oak and tannins welded on to those characters on the full-bodied palate. A top year for the Lindemans Coonawarra trio. Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec/Merlot.

Slightly lighter and more developed colour to a wine that is more savoury and lighter bodied than the St George; spicy red fruits are accompanied by a touch of Coonawarra earth; the line and length are good; 100% French oak (80% new).

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
The blend this year is 70 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 17 per cent cabernet franc and 13 per cent merlot. It's matured for fifteen months in all-French oak, with about 80 per cent of that oak new. The recipe has worked superbly for this vintage. The winemaking team likes the cabernet to dominate this wine, so that it comes across as 'strong and long'. If that's the aim then the cabernet has done a cracking job. It has gorgeous, layered, expansive tannin and a rich flood of chocolate, blackcurrant and dried herb-like flavours. Exquisite length. Mint lifts off the nose, in a positive way. And the integration of oak is outstanding. Pyrus doesn't always light our fires... but this year it does.

Holding hue well; elegant cedary, savoury, cigar box aromas; very different fruit register and texture; fine, savoury tannins and good oak. Has developed well over the past 2 years.
