An ultra-sweet Martinborough wine based on the rare Optima variety, an extremely early-ripening, Botrytis-prone cross of Muller-Thurgau with another crossing of Riesling and Sylvaner. The 1996 vintage made from individually selected botrytised berries, is one of New Zealand's most expensive wines. Deep amber, it's a decadent wine and a real conversation piece, with exceptionally concentrated honey/apricot flavours, treacly and soft, but lacks the perfume and exquisite acid balance of the finest Riesling-based dessert wines.
