Logan Weemala Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Pete Logan is not known for his Riesling, but in the good years, this can be a surprisingly smart wine. Full, ripe and chunky, the acidity also a surprising late flip to remind you that you're alive. Drink fresh, young and well chilled for maximum refreshment.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2015 Riesling is very pale in colour, has strong aromas of kaffir lime and clementine blossom while the long minerally palate has flavours of mandarin, apple and iced tea. A dry and juicy core is balanced by a mineral acidity and a little ‘spritzig’ freshness.

The Riesling grapes, grown at an elevation of 1,000 metres on the slopes of Mount Canobolas in Orange, were harvested between 11.0° and 12.3° Baumé from the 12th February to 12th March 2015. The 2015 vintage was a joy in the NSW Central Ranges with fine weather throughout the growing season. Spring and summer were sunny and dry but with mild temperatures. After picking the grapes in the cool of the night the juice remained on skins for 10 hours before being pressed. The juice was then clarified by floatation with nitrogen.

The fermentations averaged 25 days in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures. Malo-lactic fermentation was inhibited.

The wine remained on full yeast lees for 3 months post ferment with frequent stirring. The wine was filtered before bottling.

Wine Companion (2015 Vintage) says
Draws you in, plays you along, leaves you feeling chuffed. A fun wine to be with, and a more or less refined one too. Apple and pears flavours, ripe and tinged with sweetness, are the main drivers.

This riesling has picked up a few gold medals on the show circuit - and while that isn't always a recommendation, consistent form is often good form. Has a lisp of sweetness and a lot of limey bite. Almost impossible not to like it - and it's ready to rip now, there's no need to cellar it. Orange blossom, lime, a bit of textural grip and no question whatsoever over its persistence. Intensity is good too. Beautiful drinking style.

Light straw-green; offers an ever-changing display of tropical fruits combined with lime and grapefruit; then counterpoised acidity and an airbrushed of residual sweetness. It all comes together well. 11.5% alc.

Pale straw-green; lime juice aromas verging on the tropical lead into a full-flavoured, rich palate; does not need time, although will hold.
