If you have tried zinfandel before, this one will be pretty familiar to you as it's the same grape! The Italians gave it a slightly sexier name and called it their own. This Aussie offering from Massena shows raspberries and dark cherries on the nose, with just a whiff of fruitcake and earthy, licoricy spices. The palate is rich and juicy at 14.5% alcohol, with spiced dark berry flavours, a lick of earthy savouriness, gentle tannins and a unctuous finish. Rich red meat dishes are the go with this one!
Primitivo is what the Italians call the variety Zinfandel, which is revered in the Napa Valley in California. After trying the UC Davis clone of Zinfandel for a few years, we were sure that this variety would make generous and interesting wine, but somehow it just missed the mark. We sought Primitivo cuttings from the Puglia region of Italy and planted them on the gentle south slope of our ‘Dadds’ vineyard, which has yielded the perfect example of this intriguing varietal.

The bright, full colour is a sure sign of success, and the pleasing, light-to medium-bodied, display of cherry, raspberry and mulberry fruit flavors confirms the colour. Top class Primitivo. To 2018Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition
