Massena The Surly Muse Viognier

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Ripe and exotic on the bouquet, with apricot kernel, ginger and cinnamon; the palate, while unctuous, is fresh, finishing with lemony acidity.
Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
A rich and hedonistic offering of apricot, peach and spice; thickly textured, but with grapefruit-like acidity, providing a fresh twist to the tail; best enjoyed in its youth.

Matt Skinner (2009 Vintage) says
Drawing heavily on old vine fruit and traditional practices, Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins are the duo behind exciting Barossa-based label, Massena. As viognier goes, this is a stylish, slimline model that offers real depth and purity, minus the flab. The aromas range from pear to white peach and orange blossom, while, in the mouth, this example shows terrific intensity and restraint. Enjoy The Surly Muse with a bowl of roast pumpkin soup.

The Surly Muse - doesn't exactly have you painting rainbows in the sky, but viognier can be a hard grape to manage and tests a winemaker's resolve, hence the name. Nice ripeness here, stone fruits and creamy, spicy nuances. Very smooth texture and lingering apricot kernel through the finish.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
A deft and poised bouquet, exhibiting attractive peach kernel and spice aromas; the palate is ample but not in the least bit heavy with focused fruit, and lively acidity; the conclusion is seamlessly balanced and fine. Now!

Peach flesh and hints of pepper on the bouquet, and plenty of texture on the palate.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
A stunning, clear apricot style, superb ripeness and intensity, some ginger and musk too; this is a show-stopper. Creamy palate, with well-placed oak adding texture and spice, long creamy stone fruit flavours, balanced and complete.
