Massoni Cabernet Merlot

Winemaker's Notes

The Pyrenees region of Central Victoria is well known for producing red wines with great colour, body and richness. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the moderate climate of the region while Merlot produces a classically structured red of great intensity.

The 2011-12 growing season benefited from the previous year’s heavy rainfall which refilled the soil profiles in the vineyard and gave the vines a flying start in spring. Overall temperatures were warm but not excessively hot. Harvest began in early March and was completed by early April.

Deep colour, typical of the region’s reds. Ripe, chocolate and dark berry aromas with some savoury black olive notes. Oak is in the background. Full-bodied, generous palate with ripe fruit characters and a lingering finish. This wine is rather more approachable in its youth than previous releases, due largely to the stress-free growing season and our use of small open fermenters. Abundant with sweet fruit flavours and a remarkable persistence, this wine drinks well on release but has the capacity to develop with cellaring.
