Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2007 Vintage) says
This Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay red is a marriage of five varieties, in 2007 Merlot (38 per cent), Syrah (23 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (17 per cent), Cabernet Franc (14 per cent) and Malbec (8 per cent). Matured for 20 months in oak casks (30 per cent new), it is distinctive, weighty and rich, with deep colour and a brambly, spicy, sweetly oaked bouquet. It has fresh blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing excellent concentration and complexity, and a rich, savoury, rounded finish.

This Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay red is a blend of five varieties, in 2005 Merlot (41 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (30 per cent), Malbec (12 per cent), Cabernet Franc (10 per cent) and Syrah (7 per cent). Matured for 17 months in French oak casks (50 per cent new), it is full-flavoured, with blackcurrant and spice notes, and savoury, nutty characters adding complexity. Showing some development, it's drinking well now.
