Matua Valley Ararimu Red Blend

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1994 Vintage) says
The 1993 and 1991 vintages of Matua Valley's flagship red were Cabernet-predominant, but the 1994 is 60 per cent Merlot, with equal proportions of the two Cabernet Sauvignon: Sauvignon and Franc. The '91 has not aged as splendidly as 1 anticipated, but the '93 is of arresting quality, with dense, purple-black colour, a voluminous bouquet and an exciting concentration of brambly, spicy, tautly tannic flavour. The 94 is a blend of fruit grown in Matua Valley's home vineyard at Waimauku and in the Smith-Dartmoor vineyard in Hawke's Bay. Matured in new French oak barriques for 16 months, it is a voluptuous, exuberantly fruity red, packed with rich, very ripe, brambly, plummy fruit, with a long, lush, supple finish. Very classy.
