McLaren Vale III Associates Backbone GSM

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

GSM stands for the blend grenache, shiraz and mourvedre. From a great year, it's full of red fruits and spice, with good hits of toasted oak. The palate is quite full and plush, with a juicy fruit centre, a lick of dried herbs, solid tannins, and a tight, toasty finish. Shepherds pie would be awesome with this.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Deep brick red.

Nose: Dominated by the spicy notes of the Grenache and Mourvedre with some toasty oak notes in support.

Palate: The flavours are full and round dominated by the spicy components of the fully ripe fruit. The tannins are evident on the finish but are soft and integrated.

Cellaring: 3 to 5 years.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
A 70/25/5% blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvedre; the components were fermented and matured separately, the final blend made after 16 months and further matured in 1-4yo oak. Good hue; a tangy wine, full of personality, with a brew of red and black berries, spice and earth.

Savoury, herbal armoas and nice depth of dry red flavours, with strong tannins.
