Cracka Review

This might be the best vintage of Metala's classic White Label Shiraz Cabernet in years. The perfect growing conditions of 2012 meant that this was harvested at exactly the right time, making for a surprisingly balanced wine with that wonderful Langhorne Creek richness. Batting well above its normal pricepoint this year, we can't help but like this one.

Winemaker's Notes

Created from exceptional fruit from South Australia’s Langhorne Creek region, Metala is a stalwart of the Australian wine industry.

Winning the first ever Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1962, Metala has stood the test of time with its timeless label and exceptional, consistent quality with each vintage.

Consisting of two wines, the Metala ‘White Label” Shiraz Cabernet and Metala “Black Label” Original Plantings Shiraz are created by Winemaker Shavaughn Wells.

The White Label Metala has an excellent reputation for its cellaring potential – particularly considering its value and easy accessibility. The Black Label is an “old-school” classic Shiraz with rich fruit, supportive oak and the ability to age gracefully for many years.

The history of the Metala vineyard dates back to 1891 when founder George Formby planted 21 rows of Shiraz and 14 rows of Cabernet Sauvignon on his property on the banks of the Bremer River.

Most of those original vines along with a further five acres of Shiraz planted in 1894, still bear fruit with the Shiraz forming the backbone of the extraordinary “Black Label” Metala Original Plantings.

Metala White Label Shiraz Cabernet

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Right in the sweet spot. Nothing overdone but oodles of dark fruit power. Flavours of leather, blackberry, saltbush and then a mix of cloves and chocolate. Smooth body of flavour. Tangy through the finish. Tannin, but set into the fruit, so that it comes across as seamless.
