Michael Hall Flaxman's Valley Syrah

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
This is a fragrant and complex young wine from the higher altitude terroir of Eden Valley, and it shows a gently quartz mineral thread across plenty of red berries and light spice; quite savoury and precise. The palate is brightly captured with ripe dark berry and dark cherry flavour, some lovely, smooth, sweeping tannins and a long, even finish that holds fresh. A little dark chocolate and toasted spice to close.

This Flaxman's Valley shiraz has a complex, enticing set of spice and savoury characters across ripe, nicely captured plum and blackberry fruit aromas; liquorice and anise here too, and some gumleaves. There's chocolate and dark-plum fruit laid out thick on the palate, and really dense tannins, sheeted and smooth. Slatelike depth and a convincingly long finish.

As much as I'm dead against calling our shiraz 'syrah' in honour of French somethingness, it serves a purpose in distinguishing these two Michael Hall wines. I'd rather the terroir of the Flaxman's Valley take centre stage, though. Anyhow, it's a spicy and fragrant, ripe-plum and berry style that has star anise and a long, lithe and savoury palate with fine tannin detail. Distinctly Australian, though - enough said.
