Delicate and subtle green cabernet nose, leading to a lean, green varietal fruit palate.

The 2007 vintage was hand-picked in the company's Mere Road Vineyard, in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay, fermented partly with indigenous yeasts, and matured for 16 months in French oak barrels (60 per cent new). Rich, sweet-fruited and smooth, it has very ripe blackcurrant, plum, spice and liquorice flavours, showing good density and complexity, and gentle, silky tannins.

Grown in the company's shingly vineyard at Mere Road, near Hastings, the 2000 vintage is based entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon. Densely coloured, it's a natural candidate for cellaring, with substantial body (14 per cent alcohol), good fruit sweetness, a seasoning of fine quality French oak and bold, youthful, concentrated flavours, spicy, nutty and tannic.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Outstanding deep and youthful purple-red; creme de cassis fruit with sweet, spicy oak on the bouquet moves into a lusciously sweet forepalate, then a long, fine finish with significant acid. Trophy for Champion Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

Full, deep red-purple; the bouquet has impeccably ripe cassis/blackcurrant fruit supported by a deft touch of oak; the palate continues on logically, with considerable depth to the structure; ripe tannins and well-handled oak do the rest.

From a Hawke's Bay vintage that yielded few memorable red wines, the 1997 is a star. An astutely crafted wine, it has noble, dense, still-youthful colour. The palate is concentrated and rich, with a lovely depth of cassis/plum flavour, ripe tannins and a long, spicy finish. A superb wine, warm and complex, it's already approachable, but sure to be long-lived.
