Millton Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1998 Vintage) says
This Gisbome wine is New Zealand's top Chenin Blanc. It's an intensely varietal wine with concentrated, fresh, vibrant fruit flavours to the fore in some vintages (1998, 1996), nectareous scents and flavours in others (1997, 1995). The grapes are hand-picked over a month at three different stages of ripening, culminating in the final harvest of Borryris-affected fruit. About half of the final blend is fermented in large, 620-litre French oak casks, used in the Loire for Chenin Blanc, but all of the wine is barrel-aged. The 1998 vintage is still very youthful, with lovely freshness and ripeness. A mouthfilling wine with no obvious Botrytis character, it offers very rich and pure citrus and pear flavours, very refined and delicate, with a crisp, dry finish.
