The Big Man, aka Mr Halliday, has only ever scored eight Australian Sangiovese higher than 95 points. Since 1977. That's one every 5 years.

So when we saw that the 2014 Mitchell Harris Sangiovese was in sparse company of just twenty wines with 95 points, we definitely sat up and took notice. To put that in perspective, there are literally thousands of Shiraz that have scored 95. Only 20 Sangiovese!

The high-quality Pyrenees and Ballarat fruit is sourced from growers who are passionate about minimal chemical intervention. They continue on that path in the winery, too. Wild ferment and almost no fining or filtering means you enjoy intricacies in the bottle that would otherwise be left in the winery.

Points totally aside (after all, you can't drink points) in the glass it's got layer upon layer of succulent fruit, cloves and earthy dark chocolate. It's complex and it's lush.

Bright hue, moderate depth, exactly what you expect from good Sangiovese. The bright bowl of cherries (red and black) flow over, plus spice, plus chocolate - this is an Italian gelattoria. The twist of tannins on the finish brings it back into the real world in the best fashion. Value.

The nose here shows a bunch of leafy herbal notes, part region and part variety I reckon, amid red berries and cherry fruits, a little meat and spice too. The palate delivers a savoury mid-weight red with meaty notes and gently drying tannin chew. Solid red cherry flavour is at the heart of it all.
