Mount Hurtle Grenache Rose

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Vivid fuschia; has plenty of red fruit flavour; the finish is dry, but a little tough, a small matter at the price and no issue with brasserie summer food.

Attractive nuances of oriental spices; good balance and, in particular, a long, dry finish. Great value.

I tasted this a couple of times last year, including for Quaff 2008, and I've seen it again for this year's guide. It was rated 'Bloody Good' then I think it's drinking even better now. Normally, I'd be suspicious about a rose with some age: in this case, the suspicion is completely unfounded. The 2006 Mt Hurtle is still fresh and clean, gentle, delicate and restrained with intense savoury flavours that give a mid-palate tang before a nicely dry finish. Great value. Quaff on!

Fragrant, flowery rose petal and strawberry aromas and flavours; lots of flavour, with a hint of sweetness. Ridiculously cheap.

This pink wine from McLaren Vale winemaker Geoff Merrill has lovely bold redcurrant and cherry fruit flavours, is crisp, light and moderately sweet. Good value at the price.

Made for Vintage Cellars by Geoff Merrill at his Mount Hurtle winery in the McLaren Vale, this rose has delightfully alluring aromas, is soft, round and light-bodied, with attractive wild strawberry flavours and a dry finish. It has lost the first flush of youth so some may prefer a livelier, fresher style. However, this Grenache Rose has plenty to recommend it.
