Mt Buff Alpine Valley Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

From the cool slopes of Mt Buffalo (yes, the ski resort Mt Buffalo) this is a such a surprisingly savoury and well-built wine. We had our doubts (Merlot? From a ski field? Crazy talk!) but this is ripe, choc minty and genuinely full flavoured. A really surprising well built and impressive medium bodied cool climate Merlot.

Winemaker's Notes

Merlot is the most widely grown grape variety in the Alpine Valley Region. The varied micro climates and high altitudes make this area the perfect place for growing this early ripening grape.

Appearance: Vibrant Cherry red.

Nose: Soft red fruit with hints of vanilla and spice.

Palate: Medium bodied wine showing an abundance of ripe blackberries, plums and chocolate. The palate is laced with fine tannins and balanced acidity allowing for a long finish. This is an easy drinking wine for all occasions.

Food: Antipasto, pasta with Bolognese sauce and braised lamb dishes.

Cellaring: May be cellared in the medium term.

Alcohol: 14.5%

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Distinctly savoury/earthy characters reflecting both the vintage and bottle age; does not have a lot of flesh, but the spice and olive give varietal appeal.
