Mystery 94 Point Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This wine is produced by one of McLaren Vales finest producers. The grapes for this wine are sourced from a slightly higher elevation than the rest of the vale, allowing them added time to develop a more complex flavour and ripeness.

With an impressive 24 months in first and second year French oak hogsheads, the oak is undoubtedly present, but in fact quite seamless nonetheless, due to the quality of the fruit and the strength of the 2012 vintage. Juicy fruit in the middle, followed by an elegant peppery, savoury finish, marks this wine down as pure McLaren Vale opulence.

Winemaker's Notes

Attractive deep red-black colour.

Complex, spicey; typical of Blewitt Springs characters, even slightly black pepper.

More savoury palate with plenty of spice up front, and nice fruit sweetness in the middle. Soft tannin on the finish. Flavoursome and robust; definitely a food wine!

24 months in first and second year French oak hogsheads.

Mystery 94 Point Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Blewitt Springs shiraz. Firm, solid, substantial shiraz. Quality written all over it. Value almost goes without saying. Blackberry, earth, saltbush and smoky oak. Excellent integration of the various components. Tannin comes in a block but the fruit is up to the task.

The Wine Front (2012 Vintage) says
Shiraz from the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Not sure how old “Old Vines” is. It’s a big wine but it’s also big on value. This leaves a lot of higher priced Big Red Wines in its wake. It’s all blackberry, saltbush, smoky oak and tar, with a sure whack of tannin completing the fix. Barbecued meat the perfect accompaniment here. It gives you what you came for.
