NV Champagne J. Dumangin Cuvee 17 Brut Champagne Sparkling White

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This is the wine we've been waiting for – the bargain Champagne that blows all the other big names out of the water – Dumangin. Ever since last Christmas we have been searching for the finest French Champagne we could find and this grower Champagne looks the goods!

It was actually Australia’s top sparkling wine writer, Tyson Stelzer, author of ‘The Champagne Guide’ who put us onto them. Take it away Tyson “These rank among the best value small-producer Champagnes” and we heartily agree.

So how good is it – well in Tyson’s Book the Dumangin Brut 17 Non-Vintage Champagne scores a whopping 93 Points which puts it way ahead of Non-Vintage wines from big names such as Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Billecart-Salmon, even Vintage Moet & Chandon. It is also on par with Vintage Laurent-Perrier, Vintage Taittinger Comtes de Champagne and Vintage Louis Roederer, all of which sell well north of $100 per bottle. And the best bit is the brilliant value.

It is a super-elegant Champagne style - subtle with loads of finesse and drinkability that will suit a casual drink and a proper occasion. And it finishes silky smooth with super crisp acidity. Well worth a case or three.

Winemaker's Notes

Grapes: 34% Meunier, 33% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir. Non Vintage with 33% reserve wine. Pristine bouquet of vibrant lemons and strawberry hull opens out into a palate of fantastic, linear freshness with great persistence.

Food suggestions Classic as an aperitive bubbly – any non spicy seafood dishes – Excellent with a double or trebble cream cheese (Chaource...). This fine and fruity champagne is versatile and will complement most fine dishes.

Service temperature: 10°C (15 mins out of 4°C fridge).

"Impressive wine for this price ... pronounced fruit on the nose and a flinty dry finish ..."
90/100 - West Australian

"A crisp, finely balanced wine, this is packed with fresh citrus, peach-skin and green-apple flavors. It’s a textured wine with layers of minerality on the palate. The acidity is just right—a fine streak that cuts through the fruitiness and gives a tight, taut finish."

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer says
After changing contracts to improve fruit sources, the 2009 base is as refreshing and pure as I have ever seen Brut 17. A beautifully refined apéritif champagne that captures the red-fruits freshness of crunchy red apples of pinot meunier and pinot noir, with a gentle, lingering refinement, a subtle rose petal air and soft, chalky minerality. A cracking entry champagne.
