Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
Oakvale Barrel Select! Goodness ... talk about a subliminal wood message! Thing is, it's not over-oaked. It tastes of sweet vanilla oak and raspberry, with a light earthiness and peppery notes. Smooth and sweet (fruited) for the most part, before it turns savoury and powdery on the finish. Length is good. It's a nice, well-made wine. Another excellent wine from the 2007 Hunter Valley vintage.

WINESTATE (2007 Vintage) says
Subdued, youthful and strawberry-like nose, and big, extracted palate loaded with sweet fruit and high in alcohol.

Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says
This is, as the label says, a selection of the finest barrels in the shed at Oakvale. It has a bright summer berry nose and shows plenty of freshness and settled, integrated character. The palate has a layer of creamy oak spice across supple, mid-weight mixed berry fruits; tannins are fine and sturdy.
The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009
WINESTATE (2006 Vintage) says
Huge oak aromas but with some bright fruit lurking beneath. Tannic and hot in the mouth, with some fleshy, juicy fruit.

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Good hue and depth for the region; medium-bodied; very attractive red cherry and plum fruit on the supple palate finishing with fine tannins. Still varietal rather than regional, but has plenty of time to develop the latter. Gold medal Hunter Valley Wine Show '06.
