Michael Cooper (1995 Vintage) says
The first 1994 vintage of Monty Knight's Kaitaia red (under the premium Kaz Shiraz label) scooped the first gold medal awarded to a New Zealand Syrah and the first gold for a Northland wine at the 1996 Iiquorland Royal Easter Wine Show. It's a strapping, succulent, well-ripened, soft red with almost opaque colour and a bold, very rich and smooth palate packed with berryish, minty, peppery flavour. The '95 is slightly lighter and more restrained (and therefore not labelled Kaz Shiraz), but still impressive, with quite full body, French oak complexity, pleasing depth of ripe, sweet, black-pepper flavours and moderate tannins Ê a clearly varietal, finely balanced and satisfying wine.
