Pauletts Polish Hill River Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This rich, fulsome shiraz out of the Clare Valley would be just the thing for the Sunday roast lamb! Aromas of dark plums, blackberries, black pepper and soft spices lift from the glass, whilst the palate is fuller-bodied and smooth, with plum and pepper flavours, mellowing tannins, and a smooth, bright finish.

Winemaker's Notes

A continuing style since 1984 of elegance and flavour. Harvested from our vineyards from mid April to early May we are looking for that physiological grape and seed ripeness in the vineyard. This occurs at different sugar levels and even though these levels can get quite high we still retain an elegant structure through the wines. A great endorsement as to the strength of our region. Fermented in old slate open fermenters and in stainless steel tanks the wine is pressed off skins with some grape sugars still remain so that fermentation is completed in oak. We then mature in oak (only of which 12% is new) for 15 - 18 months.

Typically this wine will show ripe fruit flavours and tannins, an even balance of subtle oak, grape acid and an elegant long palate.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
A deftly made hot year wine with a spicy, peppery bouquet of dark plums1 Berries, cloves and dusty, cedary oak lifted by regional notes of mint and menthol1 It?s smooth and polished, with a vibrant depth of slightly jammy blackberry, recurrent and sweet plum flavours supported by a precise fine-grained backbone1 It finishes with genuine elegance, freshness and focus1

Rusty, meaty and very expressive, this spicy shiraz of medium to full weight has an earthy fragrance of dark flowers and plums, cassis and mulberries backed by cedary oak and a whiff of black pepper. It's ripe and generous but surprisingly elegant, smoothly matching its vibrant fruit with chocolatey oak and firmish, drying tannins and refreshing acidity.

Plenty of freshness, bright blackberry fruit and thyme aromas on the elegant palate length and fruit sweetness.

Oakier than usual from this maker, here is a rustic but flavoursome shiraz full of charm and character. Its meaty, spicy aromas of raspberries, cassis and dark plums overlie polished new oak and minty, farmyard-like influences. Generous, ripe and succulent, its velvet-like palate of deep dark and red berry flavours is framed by fine, firm tannins. It finishes with licorice-like and meaty, savoury complexity.
