Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
At just 13.5%, 2011 Bin 128 is an elegant Coonawarra shiraz that accurately captures this cool region in a cool season in its lifted violet perfume and lively acid profile. It’s tangy, taut and finely structured, with a refined tannin profile that underlines crunchy blackberry and blueberry fruits and white pepper. A well-balanced wine that will mature reliably for the medium-term.

Good crimson-purple; a high-quality Bin 128, the base of supple, medium-bodied blackberry and plum fruit pure Coonawarra, the tannin management and oak handling pure Penfolds. A great future.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Charming and spicy, ready to enjoy but able to cellar, this meaty and autumnal shiraz unfolds a peppery fragrance of cassis, raspberries, musk and chocolate/mocha oak with smoky undertones. It's long and tightly interwoven, with earthy fruits and artfully balanced oak supported by firmish, but pliant tannins. It finishes with genuine brightness, and lingering rustic attributes.

Strong colour; has considerable richness and depth to bouquet and palate alike; plummy black fruits are supported by positive oak and emphatic tannins; long-lived style sure to improve.

The best of the recent Penfolds releases, for the first time in my memory. Its earthy, leathery, rather old-fashioned aroma of animal hide and small berries is spicy and charming. While there's some plumpness and generosity the palate is very smooth, spicy and restrained, framed by fine tannins and pierced throughout by flavours of white pepper, red cherries, cassis and plums.
