Penfolds Bin 138 Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre

Expert Reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2011 Vintage) says
Good colour density with a bright red rim. Sweet fruit aromas of surprising brightness for the vintage with biscuity oak, a ginger edge and raspberry to more rustic savoury fruit aromas. More medium bodied than usual with a finer tannin thread but plenty of flavour; tamarillo, raspberry and a savoury edge as well of cold roast mutton. As a young wine it has a medium weight tannin finish and will develop.

This style is seriously under rated in Australia. Relies on old vines from the Barossa and not on new oak or alcohol. The blend changes with the season; there is no formula making it a clear reflection of Barossa vintages. In 2010 fragrant red juicy spicy fruit showing more elegance than prior vintages with plum and raspberry aromas; refined for the style smooth round fleshy length and fine grip on the finish. Drinkable now it will evolve thanks to its tannin balance.

Continual refinement is lifting this wine. Getting deeper and more concentrated with cherry savoury-lifted fruit. Relies on old vines from the Barossa and not on new oak or alcohol. The blend changes with the season; there is no formula making it a clear reflection of Barossa vintages. A new world winery with an old world feel.
