Penfolds Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz

Cracka Review

Colour: Deep and generous red with a dark core.

Nose: Instantly proclaims Penfolds ... and then, naturally Coonawarra! An aromatic colour chart reveals red, rather than blue or black fruits. Also red licorice, black olive.

Hovering above - wafts of tomato/quince/ cabernet paste meshed with cinnamon & nutmeg yeast-bun spices. Swirling & time in glass reveal fresh, bright beetroot and star-anise/ soy Asian artefact. Exotic, with barely-discernible oak (French?) at least offering one recognisable sensory hook.

Palate: Seamless. Sophisticated. Stylish. Although flavours of cola, sarsaparilla & white chocolate are immediately apparent, it is the structure & textural weave that impact. At once, tight/focussed/poised. a multi-dimensional continuum, difficult to de-construct. Complete. Fine and persistent 'shaley' tannins conspire with bright acidity (compliments of Coonawarra) to propel and complex an array of Shiraz & Cabernet fruits.

Penfolds Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz

Expert Reviews

Angus Hughson (2008 Vintage) says
A fascinating blend of almost equal proportions of Cabernet and Shiraz. A concentrated and tannin rich wine showing some plush and dense Shiraz fruit characters that are tightly wound and perfectly balanced with a core of firm grainy tannins. Quite full and muscular, it is without doubt made to improve over 20 years although will start to show its best in around 6-8.

A special bin cabernet shiraz blend that will go down among the great Australian reds of history! Almost equal parts cabernet and shiraz, with cabernet in the lead at the moment, providing incredible violet lift, black- and redcurrant and cassis purity. Consummately integrated oak. Mind-blowingly fresh yet formidably powerful; controlled yet generous; super-fine yet firm tannins. Australia’s finest blend at its zenith. Expect Grange pricing.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Excellent purple-crimson colour; the seamless bouquet is already showing elegance, complex cedar, cigar box aromas entwined with perfect ripe fruit characters .The palate has great drive, length and line; outstanding tannins give the wine great balance, texture and a certain authority; this is not a fruit bomb style. By far the best 3-year-old Penfolds red wine I have tasted.
