Cracka Review

Penfolds are still responsible for turning out unbelievable quality across their mammoth range of wines. What you get with Koonunga Hill is pure generosity of flavor and complexity for a price that is hard to argue with. This wine has the plushness of Shiraz with the structure of Cabernet to present a wine that’s rich in fruit and vanillin oak with a juicy palate and elegant tannins. Brilliant barbecue wine.

Winemaker's Notes

Koonunga Hill is a multi-district shiraz cabernet, based largely on Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra fruit. It is a classic Penfolds maturation-style wine where fruit complexity and vivacity, rather than oak, are brought to the fore.

The original Koonunga Hill blend is still just as popular today. The wine shows all the rich voluptuousness and alluring spice of great Australian shiraz and adds a welcome element of structure and spine, thanks to some premium cabernet sauvignon fruit.

Although remaining true to its origins of style, there has been a steady progression of refinement. Increased fragrancy and richness of fruit, buoyancy and weight gives this wine immediate current appeal and outstanding cellar-ability over the medium term.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Supple and elegant, smoky and slightly meaty, this modern Penfolds red unveils a vibrant bouquet of blackberries, cassis, raspberries and mulberries tightly knit with aromatic oak and lifted by scents of blue flowers. It's long, smooth and charmingly balanced, with a brightly lit presence of dark berries and plums, cedary and faintly chocolatey oak wound around a tight, crunchy spine of dusty tannins, finishing with freshness and persistence.
