Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

If anyone can make good Cabernet at a reasonable price, then surely it would be Penfolds - one of the Masters of the Red Wine Universe. Here the crew are in top form too, crafting a delicious, juicy, blackberry drenched red wine with loads of flavour and surprisingly serious structure. Clever work Penfolds!

Winemaker's Notes

The Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon is a shining example of the benefits of multi-regional blending. Cabernet sauvignon from the southeast of South Australia, including Coonawarra, often features prominently, bringing perfume and generosity of flavour on the palate; while the addition of ripe, powerful McLaren Vale fruit and elegantly proportioned Robe cabernet enhance the overall style.

The classic varietal elements of ripe blackcurrant/cedar aromas and fine-grained tannins are also present, to produce a wine with a firm, yet supple structure, subtle oak character and rich depth.

While Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon is made for relatively early drinking, the overall fruit concentration and firm tannin structure will allow the wine to cellar for the medium term.

WINESTATE (2009 Vintage) says
Good colour with a fragrant, perfumed bouquet and an appealing and tasty medium-weight palate that shows complexity with supporting fruits. Very youthful - needs more time.

Correct colour; a quite fragrant bouquet leads into an elegant, medium-bodied palate with clearly defined cabernet fruit and good tannin structure. Coonawarra must be a contributor to this wine.

Once again, shows the quality of the vintage; bright cassis and blackcurrant fruit, fine tannins and good length and balance; just a smidgeon of oak.
