Fully ripened, smooth and voluptuous, this very polished young shiraz has a musky, spicy fragrance of mulberries, cassis, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak lifted by scents of white pepper, mint and a hint of menthol. It's long and generous, with a measured, deep fruitfulness supported by velvet tannins, knit with cedary oak and finishing with spicy, faintly savoury qualities.

Finely balanced, with length and structure, it's scented with a minty, floral bouquet of cassis, mulberries and sweet and slightly meaty oak backed by nuances of musk and white pepper. Long and quite luscious, with deep, brightly lit plum-like fruit and slippery, fine-grained oak underpinned by firmish but pliant tannin, it finishes with a hint of mineral.

Powerful and lavish blackberry fruit put these in the modern shiraz category rather than the Coonawarra regional character. In 2011, minted blackberry aromas with a ripe front and considerable gravely textured firm drying tannins to finish. Needs a decant.

A plush, flavoursome shiraz whose sumptuous presence of pristine fruit and sweet oak easily handles its 15% alcohol. Lifted by nuances of pepper, spice and violets, its sweet aromas of raspberries, blackberries and fresh vanilla/chocolate oak precede a round, generous palate of jujube like brightness and intensity. It's smooth and creamy, with deep, unctuous flavours of dark berries and plums knit with a fine, pliant backbone. It finishes savoury, with lingering notes of charcuterie meats and licorice.

Smooth and juicy, with a slightly confiture-like array of red and black berries, plums and polished cedar/vanilla oak, this fragrant and spicy shiraz reveals undertones of menthol and suggestions of currant. It's quite plush and creamy, but just lacks the length of bright, vibrant fruit for a higher rating.

A brightly flavoured, intense and confiture-like early drinking shiraz with notes of violets, menthol, cloves and cinnamon beneath its vibrant, jujube-like flavours of blackcurrants, dark plums and raspberries. It's quite peppery, with some tight-knit cedar/vanilla oak and smooth, approachable tannins. It even holds its 15% alcohol well, for the short term at least.

The range of Penley red wines has expanded greatly in recent years, but Hyland shiraz is still the one I reach for most commonly. Always does very well in the price/ quality equation. 2005 RELEASE Remarkably sophisticated for the price. Blooming with vibrant plummy flavour and cut with flavours of cloves, cedar and blueberries, the play of oak and fruit a joy to hold in your mouth. Simply, a lovely drink. DRINK 2008-2012.

Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is rich and quite voluptuous, with sweet berry and seamlessly integrated oak. The palate is no less impressive, with rich, sweet fruit, the only faint criticism being a slightly chewy finish.
